Handicapped

The objective of this 4-H Riding for the Handicapped Program a therapy designed to meet the needs of the handicapped individual. Through the use of teaching aids while mounted, volunteers work with parents and teachers to develop a program for each disabled child.

Not only is the motion of the horse used in therapeutic mode, but special exercises are devised for individual needs. It is especially useful for the child who has become tired of the traditional forms of therapy used in the therapy room.

The ages of those presently enrolled range from 3-23 years and include such disabilities as cerebral palsy, Down's Syndrome, Rhett's Disease, learning disabilities, mental handicapped, arthritis and dyslexia.

Increase concentration
Increase joint mobility
Provides a sense of achievement
Strengthen and relax muscles


Handicapped2 All volunteers and participants are insured through The University of Delaware Medical Insurance which is purchased through 4-H. The organization is a member of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association.
